For over 150 years this story remained undiscovered. “The Story of Pelagie” app was created to bring a face to the many brave African American women who remain faceless in the history books, and whose lives made a real difference in America.

The app provides teachers with a tangible tool so users can move chronologically through the story, jump to a certain subject, or scroll through the timeline to a particular period.
Here are just a few ways the app can engage and enliven history, making history relevant to students’ lives today:
•Define the word “freedom” then and now
•Analyze a court case
•Identify negative stereotypes and how to dispel them
•Study an important period in American history
•Listen to Pelagie’s present day descendants, both black and white

Once downloaded the app requires a short initial network connection (cellular or Wi-Fi) for content download. From that moment on, the app works 100% offline.

The house where Pelagie and her family lived still stands today. Located in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, a town with one of the largest collections of French colonial architecture, the Bauvais-Amoureux House was built in 1792 and is a present-day museum open to the public.
